Choosing a colorist is not an easy task. Choosing the right colorist is even harder. At its very core, color grading is a collaborative effort. My craft is based on years of experience, color knowledge, and art and science. The shared goal is to create the best product that we can.
Behind the title of Senior Colorist is a creative artist. I grew up in the movies. My father was a DP, and he was also Martin Scorsese's film professor at NYU. I have been quoted as saying, "if you listen to the film with your eyes, it will tell you what it wants to look like." That's true! I speak the language of film and television, and they speak to me.
For nearly 20 years I have been sitting in the chair, color restoring some of world's best-loved classic motion pictures. Before that I worked for years in motion pictures and television as a director, editor, and motion graphics designer. And for a time I was even on-camera talent. My life's journey is being part of the film and television industry.
One does not get to sit in this chair for very long if one is not very good at their craft. As Yoda said in The Empire Strikes Back: "Do or do not. There is no try." Color grading is a dark art, where creativity, science, and technology meet. Yoda also said, “Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.” This is the crossroads where I live and work.
